Humanoid robots: The race for the factory floor is still open

DE · Humanoide Roboter: Das Rennen um die Fabrikhalle ist noch offen

Humanoid robots: More and more companies are producing them, but when will they actually start working in industry? Human-like machines are expected to soon stand side-by-side with factory workers. Experts, manufacturers, and industry representatives currently disagree on how realistic this scenario is.

  • At the invest.austria conference 2026, industry representatives discussed humanoid robots in industry. They agreed that the technical know-how is available, but the competition to deliver the first industrial applications is still open. Only practical deployment can demonstrate whether the robots work and attract broad investor support.
  • Nikolaus Keuth of EY says many pilot projects fail when the technology is not ready, expectations are too high, or a real business case and concrete use cases are missing. The first task is to determine how the technology can scale; use-case clusters are needed instead of isolated applications.
  • Majdoline Wahbi of Kiosmo sees too little funding for go-to-market in Europe and insufficient connections between research, talent, and industry. She says 15 percent of researchers in Europe want to start a company, compared with 45 percent in the United States. Investor Christopher Polligkeit highlights humanoid robotics’ potential contribution to addressing labor shortages.
  • Christian Tauber of NEOALP says there is no universal blueprint yet for integrating the technology into real-world environments. Key factors include industrial-grade hardware, more and more diverse data, and protection of companies’ know-how.
