Phones out, reading in: This is how Austrian students will truly become AI-savvy.
DE · Handy raus, Lesen rein: So werden Österreichs Schüler wirklich KI-fit
GoStudent founder Felix Ohswald argues that AI competence begins with reading, writing, and arithmetic. According to the guest article, the 2026 Education Report shows that many Austrian students use AI for this purpose without formal instruction; Ohswald advocates for daily practice of these basic skills and targeted, guided use of AI.
Vezetői összefoglaló (AI)
- The GoStudent report on the future of education in 2026 is based on a survey of 3,001 parents and their children, as well as 300 teachers in six European countries; in Austria, 500 families were surveyed. According to the report, 65 percent of Austrian students who use AI for school have already submitted AI-related content as their own work; 43 percent have never had AI-related lessons.
- According to Ohswald, meaningful AI competence builds on reading, writing, and arithmetic, because students can only then examine and evaluate AI results. In his article, he points to declining reading and math skills as well as concentration problems and advocates for daily training of these basic skills and a ban on private smartphones in schools.
- As alternatives to a separate AI subject in schools, Ohswald recommends using AI strategically in the classroom: revealing learning paths in homework assignments, strengthening oral exams, and having AI output checked for errors. He considers AI a supportive tool that makes good teachers more effective, but not a replacement for them.
